COUNCIL MEETINGS
1st & 3rd Thursdays in Parish Hall, (Rosary @ 6:50, Meeting @ 7:00).

ABOUT OUR COUNCIL
It is named after Pope John XXIII. Pope John XXIII Council works closely with the Parish of St. Francis of Assisi in Burien, WA, providing funds for various projects and support to many parish functions and activities. The Knights of Columbus is an international organization of Catholic men founded on the principles of 'Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism'. At the present time there are over 1.7 million members, 12,000 in Washington State. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to any practical Catholic man over the age of 18 in union with the Holy See. The purpose, as stated in October, 1882 by the founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, was to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement, to promote closer ties of fraternity among them; and to set up an elementary system of insurance so that the widows and children of members in the group who might die would not find themselves in dire financial straits.
Pope John XXIII Council 5495 (the Burien Council) serves the St Francis parish. Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at the St. Francis Parish Hall. They are not open to non-members unless it is an open meeting. Currently, there are 105 members.

CURRENT PROGRAMS
The Knights of Columbus is dedicated to helping and supporting priests and religious and pro-life causes.
Council 5495 contributes to a state Pro-life Program and also contributes money and baby items to Pregnancy Aid of Des Moines at an annual "baby shower".
The council supports a state Pennies-For-Heaven (vocations program) and provides direct support to three seminarians a year through the national RSVP program. Council members and their families save their pennies all year for a pennies weigh-in and potluck supper each May.
The council contributes to Morality in Media each year and supports a number of local (Seattle area) charities on an irregular basis. Some of these are the Matt Talbot Center, St. Martin de Porres, and the Francis House.
To raise money for these charities, Council 5495 holds a number of breakfasts at St. Francis Parish and conducts an annual raffle.
Money is also raised by the sale of religious Christmas cards at St. Francis. This is part of the national K of C "Keep Christ in Christmas" campaign. Proceeds from the breakfast at St. Francis are given to the youth programs of the parish. In previous years the council has supported a Little League baseball team and provided supplies for CYO athletic programs.
The officers lay out the program for each fraternal year at the beginning of each year for that year. The council assists in the upkeep of the St. Francis parish hall (its meeting place) and puts aside a sum of money each month for that purpose. Members of Council 5495 were instrumental in making the parish hall a usable meeting and social hall after its de-activation as a place of worship.
Members planned and furnished he kitchen, have painted and wired, bought tables and chairs.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Council 5495 has a number of dinners and potluck suppers during the year for its members and guests, a Christmas party and an annual backyard barbecue. For many years the council held a New Year's Eve Dance in Unity Place and an annual picnic. The council sponsors a basketball free-throw shooting contest for grade school boys and girls and a Christmas holiday basketball tournament for seventh grade girls CYO teams. Two golf tournaments are held each summer. These are open to members and guests.
