Stewardship
“The Christian community is a community of people who remind each other who they truly are the beloved of God. And everything around us is trying to tell me that it is not true.” “Beloved: Henri Nouwen in Conversation”, p. 20. Stewardship reminds that we are God’s beloved.

March 7, 2010 - Third Sunday of Lent

Pastor's Thoughts

I took my own advice from last week and went skiing at Mt. Bachelor in central Oregon. I had three
wonderful days of skiing out of four. Actually I needed that day off to recover from sore muscles that I do not usually use. Two of those three days were filled with blue skies and sunshine. It is really nice to ski on that kind of day. So while it was Lent, I did refresh myself and enjoyed nature in a wonderful way. I give thanks to God for providing such a great experience.

Now I have to get into the other side of Lent. I gained a couple of pounds because all of that skiing
made me hungry and I did not fast while I was down there. So this week I will have to cut back a bit on the food that I consume. Otherwise I will gain more than a couple of pounds. Or I will have to do more walking as my doctor has advised. With this wonderful weather I do not have too many excuses for not getting out and walking. It is those excuses that prevent us all from doing more with our time during Lent. So while I try to talk myself out of my excuses, I hope that you can talk your way out of your excuses. Maybe we will meet out on the track one of these Lenten days. Have a happy Lent.

Fr. Dick

Stewardship & Administration
From the Desk Of John Eisen

Stewards of History: “We will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord . . . and they in turn will teach their own children . . . “Psalms 78

Stewardship of Talents: The Archdiocese purchased TV time for ads during Lent that encourage
Catholics who have been away from church to come home. Butch L.and Deb L. are volunteering as part of the “Inviting Catholics Home” core team. Great Thanks to Linda Stryker who shared her reflections on the stewardship of time last weekend. Linda challenges us to look at ways of serving in our parish.

ADMINISTRATION:

CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME Perhaps you have seen the TV ads about the Catholic Church and want to take another look. Or, maybe you have been very busy with life so that keeping up with faith just didn’t fit in. Whatever the circumstances or reasons, St. Francis of Assisi Church welcomes you back! If you have been away from the Catholic Church for awhile and want to catch up, then join us on Sunday afternoons from noon to 1:30pm, starting on April 11th. To sign up, please call John Eisen (206-242-4575) and see how you can get started.

IRS Rules: Any check received by the parish after December 31st must be listed as a 2010 donation,
even if the date on the check was written for December.

Sports Floor Update: The gym floor flatness issue was resolved and the sports floor was delivered this week. If the sports manufacturer signs off on the floor preparation on Wednesday (March 3) , then the floor installation should start shortly after that. The completion date had to be readjusted due to problems with the floor. The gym should be ready by the third week of March.

Unity Place Storage Room: On Monday, Dan Payne, Chris A., Lil I. and John Eisen are reorganizing and cleaning up this room. We had over 10 special toilet seats, nine walkers, unusable junk, and items like plates in five different locations. One of the goals is to have centralized supplies for all church groups in one place in marked containers. We continue our quest this Monday.

Sunday Giving via credit cards, EFT and Online giving: The parish has taken steps to increase security of our parishioners’ credit card and EFT information which will exceed federal requirements. 93 families now use these methods for donating to the parish. By late spring, the parish will offer the option of giving online.

Centering Prayer Group: will meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month (March 23rd) at 7:00pm, Parish Hall.

“Putting God First”: meets on Thursday in Unity Place, Unit 3, from 7:00-8:30pm. John Eisen and Butch Leonardson co-lead this program on meaning and implications of living our lives as stewards.

ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL-Sheila Keaton

Thanks to all the parishioners who attended The Pied Piper this past weekend. It was wonderful to have your support. The students did a marvelous job, and they learned so much from the experience. A big thanks also goes to the teachers who make all of this happen.

The school auction is also a two-night event. The Silent Auction is on Friday evening, March 19th,
at the school, and the Live Auction is on Saturday,
March 20th, at the Showbox Sodo, in downtown Seattle. The theme this year is “Paint the Town Red.”

MASS ETIQUETTE
To maintain the sacredness of the Mass, it would be most appreciated if small children, who find it difficult to remain quiet during the Mass, be taken to the “Rest Room” (baby cry room) off the vestibule. Also that personal conversation in the vestibule and sanctuary be limited to whispers, and latecomers quietly enter. Many thanks!

Please see the "This Month @ St. Francis" for a listing of events, etc.

• To remain seated in the spectator area during all contests.
• Make no derogatory comments or gestures (including making noise to distract) to players, coaches,
or fans of your own or the other team.
• Remember the adults set the example for the behavior of their team.

Our pre-game prayer: Creator God, as we prepare to play this game, we ask your help and
blessing that we may participate to the best of our abilities and with a true spirit of thankfulness
so that our efforts give greater glory to you. We ask that you protect us from all injury and guide
us in fair play. Help us to respect our opponents as they are our sisters/brothers, also under
your guidance. For this we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

preparation of vessels, hosts and wine. Sacristans are scheduled to perform their duties for all Masses on weekdays, weekends and Holy days on a rotating schedule.

FAITH FORMATION - CHERYL BROOTEN.... cbrooten@stfoa.org EXT 24

In Matthew 25:31 to 46, Jesus is describing the judgment of the nations. This is a familiar story.
The sheep and the goats are separated into two camps. The sheep receive everlasting life because they performed certain tasks and the goats are doomed to eternal punishment because they failed in performing these tasks. The most frightening aspect of the discourse is that neither the sheep nor the goats realized what they had done. Both groups are equally astonished.

The tasks form the basis of what our Church calls the Corporeal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry,
provide drink for the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, visit the sick, visit the
imprisoned and bury the dead. Yes, the list has been altered slightly! The official list says to house
the homeless instead of welcome the stranger. But the translation of the Bible proclaimed in the Mass
says to “welcome the stranger.” Welcoming the stranger is far broader than housing the homeless
and much more challenging.

Given that a stranger is simply someone you do not personally know, we are called to be welcoming
repeatedly. Smiling and acknowledging the people around you during Mass, whether you know them or not, is a wonderful expression of welcoming at St. Francis. Heartfelt welcoming goes deeper
however. We are also called to welcome by our affirmation and acceptance. Parents with small
children, in particular, need wholehearted encouragement and support. The youth need to know they matter. The elderly must find community. The goal is to include everyone in the fabric of the parish. We each have a part to play. We each add to the overall tapestry that makes up the community of St. Francis. May all of the threads find welcome!

Edge, the Middle School Youth Group, In addition to the Wednesday night meetings, a lock-in will happen on March 27th. For further information contact, Michael Stein-Ross, Youth Minister, at 206 972-9943.

Edge has multiple opportunities for volunteer support. If you are a caring, loving, faithful Catholic
who is not afraid of sixth, seventh or eighth graders, contact Michael about being a Core Member. The
youth of this parish need you!

Outreach
From The Desk of Frances Davis...... francesd1938@yahoo.com

Quote of the Week: Who said it? Answer next week:”Thanks to Christ’s action, we may enter into the “greatest” justice, which is that of love, the justice that recognizes itself in every case more a debtor than a creditor, because it has received more than could ever have been expected. Strengthened by this very experience, the Christian is moved to contribute to creating just societies,
where all receive what is necessary to live according to the dignity proper to the human person and where justice is enlivened by love.”

Last Week’s Answer “I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land.” Harriet Tubman - The Moses of her people.
1820–1913 Harriet
Tubman was an escaped slave who led many other slaves to freedom as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Although not a traditional railroad, the Underground Railroad was a critical system of transporting slaves through a secret network of safe houses. Between 1850-1858, Tubman
helped more than 300 slaves reach freedom. Harriet Tubman was also an abolitionist, Civil War soldier, and women’s rights advocate. During the Civil War she was a spy for the Federal forces in South Carolina as well as a cook and a nurse.

Third Week of Lent – The Burning Bush and the Call of Moses: Today we hear the call of Moses to lead his people from oppression to freedom. God promises to be with them as they journey to a new life. injustice, war, disease, lack of education and other opportunities.

St Francis of Assisi School
The school mission statement calls us to encourage service, and both the teachers and students are looking for ways to be of service to others. Each junior high student is committed to two hours a month of service in the community; the goal is to create an expectation of stewardship. Here is an example of community service by the eighth graders:
Under the direction of our Art teacher, Robin Besagno, the eighth graders created two banners for the Northwest Harvest celebration. We received a thank-you note from one of the organizers with these words, “Our entire staff was blown away-as were our donor guests-and begged to be able to keep the banners and display them permanently at the Harvest Warehouse.” Thanks to Robin and our eighth
grade artists for their hard work!
Other service activities this month include participating in the parish-sponsored sock drive and working at the Harvest Festival.
