Growing an Engaged Church News

Because of the snow, Fr. Dick and the Pastoral Council rescheduled the leadership meeting that presents an understanding of what engagement means, its importance for our parish and leadership role in promoting it. The new date is February 28th at 7:00pm in Unity Place.

The Current Parish Bulletin:

This Week's Note from Fr. Dick

February 5, 2011

Candlemas Day was on last Thursday, February 2nd. According to Deacon Lloyd, that was the last day of the Christmas season in England. We are into Valentine’s Day right now and Lent begins on the 22nd of this month. But the stores will be gearing up for Easter starting February 15th. Our liturgical season and the market’s holiday season do not coincide too well. Our liturgical calendar concentrates on the feastday itself, while the market’s holiday season concentrates on selling as much as they can before the feast day. While the market works to make money, we work to look more deeply into the mystery of God’s love for us. In the end, our goal is worth much more than all the money in the world.

As human beings in this world, we live with one foot in each of these worlds. We have to work to make a living in this material world, and we certainly need to provide for our spiritual welfare at the same time. We provide for our spiritual welfare, in part, through the good work we do in the material world. We are body and spirit. Both parts of our being give glory to God. We cannot deny either part of our being, because in doing so we would be denying our basic humanity.

So we celebrate Christmas with the world and Advent with the Church. We celebrate Easter with the world and Lent with the Church. We understand and live in both worlds. We glorify God being humans fully alive in both body and spirit.

...Fr. Dick

ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL - SHEILA KEATON

Before Christmas, I made the decision that this would be my last year as Principal at St. Francis of Assisi School. St. Francis has been a home to me, and the St. Francis teachers are my extended family. It will be difficult to walk away from the comfort and security that staff, parents and students have offered to me. There will be a search committee to find my replacement, led by Father Hayatsu. We will keep you posted as to their progress. ...Sheila Keaton

ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL ‘SPIRIT AWARDS’
During Catholic Schools Week, the Parents Association gives out the Spirit Award to a person(s) who has been a long-time supporter of the school and of the parish community. This year, the award was presented to: Joan and Lawrence Feil are people who you know you can always count on. They will jump right in to help when they see the need, and are always available when asked. They head up the New Family Program which provides mentors for new families to the school, and they volunteer for the pro-life parish program. Joan has served as a Confirmation sponsor, and has helped with RCIA. She is also involved in our new Family Crisis Program, and is a Eucharistic minister to the homebound. Lawrence has coached volleyball and basketball for 12 years, and has been a cub scout leader.

Dan Payne
Dan is the Facilities Manager for the parish, and has worked for the school and parish for 23 years. He serves on the Facilities Committee and the Safety Committee. He has helped out with the youth group, oversees weddings (220!) and funerals, and keeps our facilities safe, clean and in good repair. Dan comes to our assemblies and cheers the children on. As Father Wallace once said, you could not find someone who loves St. Francis more than Dan Payne!

Thank you, Joan, Lawrence and Dan, for all that you do for our school and parish.

Reading I: LV 13: 1-2, 44-46
Reading II:I Cor. 10:31-11:1
Gospel: Mk 1: 40-45

Music Ministries

Music can express the whole range of human emotions, speaks to the heart and mind, is very powerful, and reaches out in ways that words alone cannot. Therefore, we believe that music is an integral part of not only the liturgical life of the parish, but also of its spiritual, catechizing, evangelizing, social, and outreach ministries. Our songs do not stop at the church doors. They provide a vocabulary to make Eucharistic thanksgiving all day long and all life long- music is transformative and life changing at St. Francis.

Thanks to all of those who serve as music ministers- your contributions of time, talent and commitment and dedication are a real blessing to all at St. Francis. Thank you for giving of yourselves and enriching all of our lives-you are a priceless treasure and gift.

----The 8:00 choir prepares music and leads worship for the Sunday 8:00 am mass. This group rehearses on Wednesdays from 7:30 pm until 9:00 p.m in the choir loft of the church.
As the 8:00 a.m. mass is a traditional mass with organ, traditional as well as some alternative style music is prepared and enhances worship at the 8:00 a.m mass twice a month.  There are many fringe benefits- weekly backrubs, great camaraderie and guaranteed seating!!!

-----The 10:00 ensemble leads worship with a mixture of alternative style, contemporary and traditional music at the 10:00 a.m mass on Sunday mornings. The same music is also presented at the 5:00 p.m. vigil mass on Saturdays.

-------The LifeTeen music team is the music team that leads the LifeTeen mass on Sundays at 5:00 p.m. The rehearsal is from 3:45 p.m.until 5 pm in the church just prior to the LifeTeen mass at 5 p.m. Contemporary Christian music is the musical style of this mass. Come check us out-you will be glad you did! There will not be Lifeteen masses on Sunday December 25th or Sunday January 1, 2012.

---------The 'Singing Angels' kids choir leads the 5:00 p.m. Saturday vigil mass.  Thanks to all of the parents and singers!!!!!!!  This year the choir will be singing at the vigil mass at 5:00 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month (except for January 2012 and April 2012 which will be the 4th Sunday). Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m. until 4:15 p.m. in the church. The next mass will be Saturday, February 11th.

Check out the CYO Basketball playoff brackets at http://www.cyosports.blogspot.com/.  Congratulations to our six teams who’ve made the playoffs! Best wishes to all! Let’s win humbly and lose gracefully as the situation arises. Come on out and support the kids. GO EAGLES!

New this year is our Pre-Event Statement which is read aloud to the crowd by a parent/fan before each game:
Champions are those that maximize their potential. We need to create the environment in which Champions are made.
We will respect and support coaches and officials by remaining in the designated spectator areas. We will remember that youth participate for their enjoyment, not ours.
We will remember our role as a fan and applaud good effort by all competitors. We will encourage the athletes to improve their skills, be good teammates, and play by the spirit of CYO Athletics.

CYO is part of the Seattle Archdiocese Office for Youth and Young Adult Ministry. CYO Athletics exists to provide opportunities for youth to develop strong moral character, a positive self-image, and a commitment to caring for others.

Our kids have been outstanding at integrating Gospel values into the CYO experience. For example, they have shown tremendous hospitality by baking special treats to share post-game with their competitors. And during the 8th grade pentathlon one of our kids ran the second lap of the 800 meter race with an injured boy from another team—giving encouragement every step of the way. These are but two of many, many instances of our athletes showing their faith in action.

CYO Athletics is youth ministry in action and fosters an environment where children feel free to compete to the best of their abilities. Every child who strives to reach their full potential is a CYO Champion.

DO
• Cheer for your team.
• Show interest, enthusiasm, and support for your child.
• Be in control of your emotions.
• Help when asked by coaches or officials.
• Thank the coaches, officials, and other volunteers who conducted the event.

DO NOT
• Leave the spectator area during competitions.
• Advise the coach on how to coach.
• Try to coach your child during the contest.
• Make derogatory comments to players, parents, coaches, or officials of either team.
• Drink alcohol at contests or come to watch contests intoxicated.

Did you know that Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) athletic events are not scheduled on Sunday mornings so we can attend mass together as families?!

Prayer for Grade School/Middle School Sports
Creator God, As we prepare to play this (game/match), we ask your help and blessing that we may participate to the best of our abilities and with a true spirit of thankfulness so that our efforts give greater glory to you. We ask that you protect us from all injury and guide us in fair play. Help us to respect our opponents as they are our (sisters and/or brothers) also under Your Guidance.
For this we pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer for High School Sports from Knute Rockne:
Dear Lord,
In the struggle that goes on through life
We ask for a field that is fair,
A chance that is equal with all the strife,
The courage to strive and to dare;
and if we should win, let it be by the code,
With our faith and our honor held high;
And if we should lose, let us stand by the road
And cheer as the winners go by.
Amen.

“To use the tools and techniques of sport and training to overcome the hurdles of life, to transcend, is the greatest gift a coach can give or an athlete can learn.”

Weekly Faith Formation bulletin article:

Paul views his apostolic mission to preach the gospel as an obligation imposed upon him and he says, “Woe to me if I do not preach it!” (1 Corinthians 9:16) Recall that Paul was literally flattened by the presence of the risen Christ. (Acts 9:4) Paul (then Saul) was not seeking Jesus on the road to Damascus when Christ appeared to him and informed him he was to bring the gospel to the gentiles. While Paul could have refused, he would be denying his own experience of Christ. Instead he takes up his mission with zeal and determination. Paul does not take money or support from the people he evangelizes, even though he could. He offers the gospel free of charge.

What then is his reward? Paul takes great delight in others accepting his message about Christ. He is willing to make great sacrifices in order to bring the gospel to everyone. He says he makes himself “a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible.” For Paul, nothing matters more than sharing the good news about Christ through word and deed. Paul is clearly someone who had his life rearranged by God. Even though God chose him, Paul chooses to fulfill God’s commission.

What about you? What has God chosen for you to do? Each and every one of us has a Godgiven purpose in life. Most of us do not receive private revelations like Paul or Mother Teresa. This does not make our appointed task any less important, just less certain. How can we know what we are supposed to do? St. Frances de Sales says, “Stop worrying. Move on. Simply. Calmly. Peacefully. Follow the path the Lord shows you without anxiety. If what you do isn’t sinful and you are trying to do the will of God, it is enough.” God will never ask more of us that we can give. We just need to be willing to give God all we have.

LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS  A unique code. A mysterious search. A quest for a treasure beyond price. All these things are in Living Your Strengths. In fact, they are actually inside you. They are inside every human being. Welcome to the code that will unravel the adventure you have been on since you were born-the adventure of life God gave each of us in the divine image.

LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS - Arranger
The blessing of your Arranger talent begins with what you can see and perceive. You see patterns and perceive how things go together or could go together; you see groupings and connections. You easily arrange items, facts and information, people, and the many things that must come together for successful events and activities. You are a genius at coordinating people and events, and you ‘multitask’ like few others. The ultimate blessing in the Arranger talent is seen in what you do after you have completed a project. You go back and arrange and rearrange in your mind what you did. This results in increased effectiveness and efficiency in the future. How do you use your Arranger strength in service of God and others? (1 staff person has this strength; can you guess who?)

Frances Davis: Office Hours Monday - Thursday 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM (206) 242-4575, ext 29,

francesd1938(_AT_)yahoo.com

From the desk of Frances Davis:

About this time every year I ask myself, “What am I going to do for Lent?” (Sound familiar?) One year I gave up coffee and afterward I thought, “So what?” I usually end up “wandering in the desert of indecision” with no real plan. Lent is all about adding Christian simplicity to our lives. But how?

Besides attending Mass and Reconciliation (Confession), there are two ways you and I can be guided in our Lenten journey: One is by attending an interactive workshop here at St. Francis: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus: A Lenten-Journey Roadmap to Christian Simplicity. By attending this Workshop for one hour, week-by-week, each Friday during Lent, together we can learn specific steps to take to live simply so that others may simply live. For details and the schedule, save the flyer in this week’s bulletin. Register NOW by calling the Parish Office and telling Naomi you want to register for Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus.

Another guide to Lent is Operation Rice Bowl. Rice Bowl is not just a fund-raiser. The Rice Bowl calendar in your Rice Bowl packet is a day-byday guide to prayer, fasting, learning and giving for a rich Lenten experience. When you give, you are not being asked to write a large check. Following the daily Rice Bowl calendar teaches us the meaning of giving in small amounts two or three times a week by putting coins in your Rice Bowl. Rice Bowl packets will be handed out at Masses on February 18 and 19. At the Masses on that weekend, a video on El Salvador will be shown. We have a sister parish in El Salvador. See the work that Catholic Relief Services is doing in El Salvador by providing villages with a source of fresh, clean water. Your contributions of money to Rice Bowl further this work. Your contribution of simple living benefits the whole world.

Another fun way of participating in Rice Bowl is by attending the Friday Lenten Soup Suppers. Enjoy fellowship and a simple meal of soup and bread, and then give the money you saved from preparing a meal at home to Rice Bowl.

Ash Wednesday is February 22.
The first Friday of Lent, February 24, is the traditional Fish Dinner. The following 5 Fridays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, are the Lenten Soup Suppers at 5pm in Unity Place. The Pastoral Council will host the Soup Supper on March 2, and the Sister Parish Committee will host the Soup Supper on March 9. If your group wants to prepare a Lenten Soup Supper on one of the remaining three Fridays, call me in the Outreach Office and pick your date! Frances Davis, 242-4575 ext 29 or email

francesd1938(_AT_)yahoo.com

Suggestion: Why cook at home on the Fridays of Lent? You could eat at the Fish Dinner or the Soup Supper and then head on over to the Parish Hall for the Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus workshop. Too tired after a day of work? Head on over to the church and be fed and renewed. What could be easier than that?

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY - On the fourth Tuesday of the month, St. Martin de Porres could use 500 sandwiches instead of the 300 we have been making. The sandwich makers feel that God is calling us to do this. The extra 200 sandwiches will take another half hour to make. We should be finished by 10:30. We need more help, though. Please lend your hand right after Mass in Unity Kitchen on the fourth Tuesday of the month. A school parent could earn an hour of service. We purchase scrip for the sandwich supplies, so the school benefits and it is a win-win for all. We encourage cash donations to cover the cost of the sandwiches. $10 will make enough sandwiches for 20 men.

The Outreach Office has had an excellent suggestion from a parishioner. The suggestion is that we place a notice in the bulletin reminding anyone who is ill and homebound to call the Outreach Office and request that a Eucharistic minister bring them Eucharist. The question I have, in the words of the hymn, is “Whom shall I send?” We have no available Eucharistic ministers. Is there anyone out there who has heard the call? Without Eucharistic ministers to the hospital and homebound, we can’t fulfill the mission of the parish.

There is an opening for someone to take Eucharist to Highline Hospital every other Sunday and another opening for someone to take Eucharist to a homebound woman every other week. Training is provided. Preparation for this ministry involves a personal interview, doing some reading, attending a three-hour class and passing a Washington State Patrol background check. We need a man, woman or married couple for these two ministries.  Contact Frances Davis, 242-4575 ext 29 or

It’s not too soon to begin preparing for Operation Rice Bowl, the Lenten Program of Catholic Relief Services. One of the ways we support Operation Rice Bowl at St. Francis of Assisi is with our Lenten Soup Suppers. Parish groups volunteer to prepare a simple meal of soup and bread. Members of the parish gather in Unity Place to enjoy fellowship and the delicious soup. They donate to Rice Bowl what it might have cost them to prepare a meal at home.

Volunteers who bring salads and desserts for funerals or other events, please pick up your dishes. Donna F. can arrange to be in Unity after Mass. Her number is 433-8547. Thank you!

The Outreach Office requests that in the future, donations of clothing be taken to St. Vincent de Paul on 1st Avenue S in Burien. The folks there will take it right out of your car and handle it for you. Hospitality House has an overstock of clothing at the present time. Leaving clothing donations at the  church ends up being too much of a good thing. I have to find a way to get them to the St. Vincent de Paul store. Hospitality House does not need toiletries or shampoo but I can route those items to St. Martin de Porres, Lazarus Day Center or Operation Nightwatch. Hospitality House does need Metro bus tickets, laundry products and paper products., so those are ways to remember them. Thank you.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL seeks some generous souls to help people in need. It involves giving 2-3 hours a week in service, as a team member. We make home and telephone visits. If you’d like to become a Vincentian, please call the parish office and
leave your name and number. Thank you!

Catholic Social Teaching
Archbishop Desmond Tutu reflects on the human dignity of each person as reflected in the other
As a created and precious child of God I have been blessed with a great sense of dignity. Recognizing that we are all created as sisters and brothers belong to a common humanity, leads us to treat one another with respect. Our sense of dignity is affirmed when our uniqueness is recognized and valued by thosearound us, as we all become global citizens.

Africans have something called Ubuntu. It captures the essence of being human. It embraces hospitality, caring about others, being able to go the extra mile for the sake of others. We believe that a person is a person through another person; that my humanity is caught up, bound up, inextricably, with yours. Respecting a person takes account of their feelings and experiences; their social situation; their ethnic, religious, and sexual identity, though they may be very different from my own.

The practice of Ubuntu demands an open-mindedness that celebrates difference, recognizing the validity of others’circumstances and experiences. It recognizes the uniqueness of each person and looks for the image of God in the other.
- Most Reverend Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town

From Archdiocesan Missions Office
Take ACTION! - Protect our Poor and Vulnerable Brothers and Sisters
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops urges Congress and the Administration to protect programs for poor and vulnerable persons during deficit reduction negotiations.
What you can do:
Urge the Administration & Congress to give priority to poor and vulnerable persons in the negotiations to reduce the deficit. Fiscal responsibility is important and our current budget deficit must be addressed; however, a just framework for future budgets cannot rely on disproportionate cuts in essential services to poor persons. A balanced approach requires shared sacrifice by all, including raising adequate revenues, eliminating unnecessary spending, and addressing the long-term costs of health insurance and retirement programs fairly.
Urge Congress and the Administration to consider these moral criteria to guide their budgetary decisions:
1. Every budget decision should be assessed by whether it protects or threatens human life and dignity.
2. A central moral measure of any budget proposal is how it affects “the least of these” (Matthew 25). The needs of those  who are hungry and homeless, without work, or in poverty should come first.
3. Government and other institutions have a shared responsibility to promote the common good of all, especially ordinary  workers and families who struggle to live in dignity in difficult economic time.

MASS ETIQUETTE
To maintain the sacredness of the Mass, it would be most appreciated if small children, who find it difficult to remain quiet during the Mass, be taken to the “Rest Room” (baby cry room) off the vestibule. Also that personal conversation in the vestibule and sanctuary be limited to whispers, and latecomers quietly enter. Many thanks!
